Autosave
So, I just spent an hour writing a gigantic post about everything I've been doing over the past two months, including a couple of pictures an about 20 links.  And then I was tagging my post but didn't know whether to use commas (which I'd consider normal) or spaces (like Flickr), so I hit the question mark beside the "Tags" field, and POOF! There goes my post. Apparently since I had a previous autosaved draft that I never turned into a post, it went back to that one.  Ugh.  So, since I'm not about to rewrite the whole thing, here are the shorthand notes:

-- Went to Vegas.  Good times.
-- Went camping in Big Basin.   More good times.
-- Lost a contact.  Bad times.
-- Lasik is expensive (more bad times), so getting disposable contacts.
-- Yelp Happy Hours.  Good times.
-- Portland / Ubuntu Live / OSCON.  Really good times.
-- LinuxWorld -- Weird times.
-- Open Solutions Alliance ... hmmm, need input here.

If you're interested, I just uploaded a bunch of pics to Flickr:
My Flickr Stream

Specifically, the destruction of my apartment (which is almost completely repaired now, but not quite).

And most importantly, me beating Tom at Bungee Run

That's all for now...

What's going on with the apartment?

The Open Solutions Alliance appears to be down. What's it about?

The apartment wasn't up to code, and they had to do all sorts of rewiring. It was a major pain, but they did give me a chunk of money back for the inconvenience.

Regarding the OSA, it's a collection of software companies working together to promote "Open Solutions" in the business world (mostly in the business application space - things like CRM and ERP systems).

I personally think the OSA is a good idea, but they have faced a bit of controversy, because they do not require member companies to conform to the Open Source Definition. That said, the majority of members do provide the core of their product under an OSI-approved license (usually GPL, BSD, or ASL). Here's a snapshot of the original members' licenses in a matrix:

http://www.opensolutionsalliance.org/Portal.do?command=Default&siteId=2&tabId=9&pageId=45

In fact, of those members in the matrix, Centric is the only one who doesn't release some portion of their product under an OSI-approved license; they offer source code but prohibit redistribution. (OpenBravo's license is a badgeware license, which wasn't approved at the time of the snapshot, but apparently licenses of that style are being approved now.)

I think it's unfortunate that the OSA didn't stick with the Open Source Definition as a guideline for admitting members, but it doesn't render the organization useless. The group has agreed that any code produced as an OSA-run project will use an OSI-approved license, which is good. Also, much of the group's work is about agreeing on open standards for data interchange between applications, application monitoring interfaces, and how service level agreements should work between groups of small companies, and I think all of that is valuable, too.

I'd love to hear your thoughts about this...

Why not use anti-anxiety drugs Zanax? Although their side effects, the treatment effects are undispensible.
